Leadership Change
Summers declared he would withdraw from public roles after Congressional panel released his repeated messages with Epstein

Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is leaving the governing body at OpenAI, just days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became publicly available.

Summers stated in an announcement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have contributed, optimistic about the prospects of the company, and anticipate following their progress".

Summers, who once led the Ivy League institution, stated on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Epstein.

Email Communications

The freshly disclosed emails showed that Summers communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 arrest for accused sex trafficking of minors.

In another announcement, the AI firm stated it understood Summers' decision to step down.

"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he provided to the directors," the organization commented.

Political Context

This announcement comes after the two houses of the US legislature agreed on this week to endorse a measure that would mandate the federal prosecutors to release its files on the case.

The legislation will afterward head to the administration of President Trump for endorsement. Trump has said he intends to sign the legislation, after modifying his view on the issue following objections from his followers.

Email Contents

A batch of financier-linked emails released by the Congressional committee last week mentioned several well-known personalities in the financier's former circle, without indicating any criminal activity by those figures.

The messages revealed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often seeking to introduce the academic to influential international personalities.

Personal Response

After the correspondence were shared with the public, the former official said he accepted "full responsibility for my ill-advised decision to maintain interacting with the financier".

He added that he desired "to restore confidence and fix relationships with the individuals most important to me".

Previous Positions

The professor served in leadership roles under party leaders; functioning as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under President Obama.

He led Harvard from five years and continues to be a academic there. When stating his withdrawal from public commitments previously on this week, he said he would persist with his teaching commitments.

Further Repercussions

Following Summers' announcement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a left-leaning policy institute in DC where he was a senior fellow, confirmed that Summers was not affiliated with the organization.

Summers became part of the leadership of OpenAI, which develops the language model, in last year - following a failed attempt to oust its top executive Sam Altman.
